Slaty Bunting

Typical kestrel with a rufous back, barred tail, and dark “moustache” mark on the face. Can be rufous or white on the underparts. Found throughout Madagascar in almost all habitats except thick forest. Conspicuous in towns and villages, where it often nests on buildings. Spends much of its time on the wing, often hovering. Call is a high, repeated “keek.” Smaller and slimmer than Banded Kestrel, rufous rather than gray, and without broad bars on the belly. 

Secretive, rare medium-sized antshrike of the dense forests of the Cordillera Divisor of remote western Brazil and eastern Peru. Males are dark gray with a bluish tint to the back and upperparts, while females are bluish-gray above and brownish-orange below. Inhabits the lower levels of forests, where it is more often heard than seen; voice is a fast series of notes increasing in speed before finishing with a final higher note.

Medium-sized finch of hilly and montane forests and dense brushy forest edge. Male is the color of red wine, with crisp lilac eyebrows. Female is dark buffy-brown with faint streaks on the back and breast. Forages on the ground near or in dense shrubs and bushes. Gives sharp bunting-like “zip” and “zink.”
