West African Batis
Batis occulta
A classically patterned batis of forest, forest edges, villages, and towns in tropical lowlands and foothills. Males have white underparts bisected by a black chest band, mostly black upperparts with a broken white eye-line, white on the nape, scalloped white and gray on the back, and a white wingbar that extends to the tip of the wings in the secondary flight feathers. The female is similar but has less of an eyebrow, a grayer crown and back, and a reddish chest band. Overlaps with several other batis species, but note West African Batis’s combination of broken eyebrow and neat chest band. Song is a high-pitched series of buzzy calls and trills interspersed with whistles, often with the same whistled call being repeated at length.

White-eared Brown-Dove
Phapitreron leucotis
A fairly small dove of forest and edge from the lowlands to the lower mountains. Brown above, with a gray or pinkish head, neck, and chest, bluish iridescence on the back of the neck, a pale pinkish belly, and white corners to the tail. Note the black and pale streaks under the eye and the small triangle of bare skin behind it. Similar to Amethyst Brown-Dove, but White-eared has blue on the back of the neck and white under the base of the tail. Song is an accelerating series of rising “wup” notes.
James's Flamingo
Phoenicoparrus jamesi
Rather local; found at salt lakes and bogs in the high Andes. Associates readily with Chilean and Andean Flamingos, although each species often stays slightly apart within mixed groups. James’s is the smallest New World flamingo best identified by its relatively short, stubby bill, which is yellow with a black tip. Adult and older immature have distinctive red legs and feet (can be whitish when caked with dried salt). Immature is whitish overall, like other immature flamingos.
Wattled Ibis
Bostrychia carunculata
A dark ibis with a shaggy crest and a small wattle below the bill that is difficult to see. White patches in the wings are distinctive, especially in flight. Found in montane habitats including grasslands, marshes, moorlands, and even urban lawns. Often in small flocks. Somewhat similar to other dark ibis, but easily separated by the white in the wing. The calls are raspy and rough.
