Kamchatka Leaf Warbler
Phylloscopus examinandus
Small songbird, essentially identical in plumage to Arctic Warbler and Japanese Leaf Warbler. A late spring migrant, often moving up the Chinese coast from Southeast Asia in mid- to late May. Breeds in the taiga forests and forest edges of the Kamchatka peninsula, Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. Call is a low “chuck,” averaging lower than that of Japanese Leaf and Arctic Warblers. Song is a broken series of chattering notes, with each segment being in more discrete phrases than the more consistent, higher-pitched song of Arctic.

Phoenix Petrel
Pterodroma alba
A long-winged petrel, predominantly dark with a gleaming white belly. Throat patch often shows pale speckling, and birds sometimes appear distinctly pale-throated. Key identification feature is the prominent pale bar at the leading edge of the dark underwing between the elbow and body. Similar in pattern to Tahiti Petrel, but much smaller-billed and sometimes shows a pale throat. Usually flies with wings bent at the elbow, unlike the remarkably straight-winged Tahiti Petrel. Silent at sea.

Buffy Hummingbird
Leucippus fallax
Medium-sized brown-and-green hummingbird. Upperparts pale green, underparts warm buff; bill medium-sized; has dull white spot behind eyes and boldly white tipped, rounded tail. Locally fairly common; territorial. Restricted to desert scrub, dry forest edges, and mangroves in northern Venezuela and extreme northeastern Colombia. Ruby Topaz female similar but with rufous tail and shorter bill.

White-fronted Tit
Sittiparus semilarvatus
A small, uncommon bird of lowland and foothill forest canopy and edge. Entirely dark with an obvious white mark from the forehead down between the bill and eye. Males are entirely black and females have dark brown underparts. Varies regionally, with Mindanao birds having an additional white mark in the wing. Unmistakable. Voice includes a downslurred series of three fairly high-pitched downslurred notes, “piu-piu piu.” Also gives a rapid staccato trill.
