Spectacled Spiderhunter

Large tanager with a strong bill. It has a rather dirty blue-gray body with darker blue wings. Similar to Blue-gray Tanager, but duller overall and lacks the Blue-gray’s white shoulder; also similar to Azure-shouldered Tanager, but without the bluish shoulder and dark patch in front of the eye. Occurs in a variety of habitats from forest edges to agricultural areas, urban parks, and gardens.

Small finchlike bird, compact and short tailed with a stout bill. Male has notably orange-tinged underparts and dark upperparts with a purplish sheen. The orange-yellow crown is extensive (not restricted to the forehead like many other euphonias). Also note the underside of the tail, which is entirely dark. Females are plain yellowish-olive overall and difficult to separate from other euphonias, especially Thick-billed, but usually seen in pairs or small groups with males. Frequents woodlands, edges, and clearings in lowlands and foothills, often in fairly dry regions. Can be found in mixed-feeding flocks with other species such as warblers and tanagers.

A small, compact parrot of mid and high montane forest edge. Green body with brown hood and chest. Males of one race have a yellow hind collar. Inconspicuous and most easily found at fruiting trees. Similar to Madarasz's Tiger-Parrot, but where they co-occur, Modest Tiger-Parrot is usually at higher elevations. Males are very similar but Modest has a darker head with less spotting. Female Modest has a brown head and strongly barred chest. Call, a nasal upslurred “chuuit!” similar to Brehm’s Tiger-Parrot, or a high-low-middle slurred “chii-oo-wii!
