Ecuadorian Ground Dove

Columbina buckleyi

Small dove with square tail. Found primarily in western Ecuador but also in far southern Colombia and northern Peru. Occurs in lowlands and foothills, where it is seen in pairs or small flocks in open agricultural areas or brushy woodland. Male is overall pale grayish-brown with a blue-gray crown and nape and black spots on the wings. Legs are pink. Female is similar to male but somewhat warmer brown, and she lacks gray on the head and has duller legs. In flight, both sexes lack rufous in the wings.

识别特征

The Ecuadorian ground dove is 18 cm (7.1 in) long and weighs about 57 g (2.0 oz). The male's forehead and face are grayish pink that darkens to a deep mauve pink on the breast and underparts. Its crown and nape are bluish gray and the upperparts brownish gray. The closed wing shows lines of black spots. The central tail feathers are gray and the rest black; the outermost have white tips. The female is browner than the male with less of a pink wash.

分类信息

The Ecuadorian ground dove and three other species were for a time placed in genus Columbigallina, which was later merged into Columbina. It was also formerly treated as a subspecies of ruddy ground dove (C. talpacoti) and forms a superspecies with it now.<p>The Ecuadorian ground dove has two subspecies, the nominate C. b. buckleyi and C. b. dorsti.

The nominate subspecies of Ecuadorian ground dove is found from Esmeraldas Province in north-western Ecuador south to Peru's far northern Department of Tumbes. C. b. dorsti is found separately, in the Marañon Valley of north-western Peru. They inhabit a range of landscapes including dry open semi-deciduous and deciduous woodland and thicker woodland, gardens, agricultural areas, and more humid young secondary forest. In elevation the species ranges from sea level to 2,000 m (6,600 ft).

A small, long-billed, long-tailed bird of dense undergrowth in lowland and foothill forest in eastern Mindanao. Has an olive-green back and wings, an olive-green tail often held cocked, a pale gray belly, a black crown, and a white brow. Throat and chest are black in the male and white in the female with streaking around the edge. Similar to Rufous-fronted Tailorbird, especially from behind, but White-browed has black on the head with a white brow. Voice includes monotonous piping notes given in series, or a rapid whistled trill which can be rising or falling.

A small long-tailed bird found in gallery forests near water, mostly foraging in the understory. Rusty above and pale below with a white eyebrow. Similar to Yellow-chinned Spinetail, but has a pale (not black) lower mandible. The song, usually given as a duet, is a series of high-pitched notes.

Huge cuckoo that is black above and white below. Immature has white barring across its upperparts. Looks raptor-like in powerful, swooping flight. Uncommon bird of rainforest, gallery forest, and moist woodland, especially miombo. Call is a loud, repeated “wheet-it”, often given in a high display flight. Adult is separated from Great Spotted, Levaillant’s, and Pied cuckoos by its lack of a crest or white in the wing. Immature is similar to Great Spotted Cuckoo, but has black-and-white speckles on the head, and lacks a crest.
