Chinese White-browed Rosefinch

Carpodacus dubius

Attractive medium-sized rosefinch. Male has a bright pink face and underparts; unlike the male Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch, he lacks the dark line through the eye, and so does not have an “eyebrowed” appearance. Female is streaky brown all over with paler underparts. Breeds in semi-open scrub, forests, and forest edge at around 3000-4800 meters. Winters in scrubby hilly habitat, sometimes at lower altitudes. Forages on the ground in pairs or small flocks. Commonly gives a rapid series of nasal bleats.

Sri Lanka White-eye

Sri Lanka White-eye

Zosterops ceylonensis

A small, greenish white-eye, with a bold white eye ring and yellow throat. Usually encountered in active flocks within the canopy of forest and neighboring wooded areas in the hills and mountains. Similar to Indian White-eye, but Sri Lanka White-eye is larger, longer-billed, duller overall, particularly on the throat and belly. Also generally greener and lacking the yellow forehead of Indian White-eye. Frequently vocalizes; song is a jumble of fast-paced “chuk-chuk-chuk” notes, call a high-pitched “chirp”.

Madagascar Blue-Pigeon

Madagascar Blue-Pigeon

Alectroenas madagascariensis

Medium-sized chunky pigeon that is dark blue with a maroon tail. Appears short-tailed in flight. Found in and around rainforest in eastern, central, and northern Madagascar. Most often seen perched up conspicuously on emergent trees, feeding on fruiting trees, or in flight in small flocks. Virtually silent, which is very unusual for a pigeon. Dark-blue coloration separates it from all other pigeons on Madagascar.

Black-throated Hermit

Black-throated Hermit

Phaethornis atrimentalis

Small hummingbird with a long white-tipped tail. Its rufous underparts, green back, and striped face are features typical of many hermits, but the dark throat and white vent help separate it from other similar species. Inhabits rainforest understory in lowlands east of the Andes and in adjacent foothills. It is difficult to see well as it zips between flowers in the gloom. Sometimes gives a high-pitched, squeaky song from a low perch.
