Gray-headed Tody-Flycatcher

A striking tinamou of the northern chaco desert and scrub. Very similar to Elegant Crested-Tinamou, but range does not overlap. Prefers dense scrub and understory, but can also be seen in openings and roadsides. Voice distinctive, and quite different from Elegant Crested-Tinamou: two whistles that are each flat in pitch, then rising sharply in pitch at the end - “Tooooo-wee! Tooo-wee!”

Handsome hooded gull of the Andes; also ranges to coastal areas in nonbreeding season. Found at lakes, wetlands, and bogs; ranging to plowed fields and farmland, and beaches and river mouths on the coast. Larger and stockier than other hooded gulls, with diagnostic wingtip pattern: broad white band in black wingtip; all ages have relatively small dark bill and dark legs. Breeding adult has blackish hood with white eyering. Immature and nonbreeding plumages have weak dark spot on cheeks.

A chunky green inhabitant of wet forests; typically found in pairs or small flocks in or near the canopy. Note this species’ yellow bill, rosy throat, and white eyering. The somewhat similar Black-billed Parrot is distinguished from Yellow-billed Parrot by its black bill, black eyering, and green throat. When the two species are together, the larger size of the Yellow-billed is evident. The characteristics noted above also separate this species from other parrots that might have escaped from captivity. Calls include a a “maa-weep” and a “mwah” that is not as harsh as the corresponding call of the Black-billed Parrot.
