Racket-tailed Treepie
Crypsirina temia
Glossy black corvid with a long, broad-tipped tail and brilliant blue eyes. Plumage shines glossy blue-green in good lighting. Small black mask encloses the eye and bill base. Compare Ratchet-tailed Treepie, which is darker-eyed and has a tail shaped like a chainsaw. Clambers and jumps through the vegetation, singly or in pairs or occasionally small flocks, in open lowland and foothill forests and forest edges. Gives various rasping, croaking, and nasal notes.

Piura Chat-Tyrant
Ochthoeca piurae
Scarce flycatcher found along the west slope of the Andes in northern and central Peru. Like other chat-tyrants, it features a black mask and a long white eyebrow. Chestnut wing stripes and the lack of any yellow in the eyebrow help separate it from other species in range. Inhabits dry and semi-humid forest. Typical song is a dry, toneless trill, sometimes with a staccato quality.

White-collared Foliage-gleaner
Anabazenops fuscus
Large foliage-gleaner with a wedge-shaped bill. Found in the middle and lower levels of forests with bamboo where it acrobatically hangs upside-down on branches and searches for prey in clusters of dead leaves. Note the dark-brown face that is set off with a prominent pale eyebrow, a pale eyering, and a white collar. It is olive-brown on the back with a buff belly and rufous tail. The song is a loud and fast series of “jek-jek-jek” notes.

Madagascar Pochard
Aythya innotata
Extremely rare diving duck that was long thought extinct before being rediscovered in 2006 in a remote site in northern Madagascar. A large duck that is mostly rich brown, with white under the tail. Shows a conspicuous white wing stripe in flight. Males have a pale eye and females a dark one. Lives on freshwater lakes and wetlands. Dives frequently, like a grebe, but is much larger. Lacks the pale face of White-faced Whistling-Duck. Smaller than Meller’s Duck, with darker brown coloration and white under the tail.
