Black-and-white Mannikin
Spermestes bicolor
Small, big-billed, short-tailed waxbill. Shows profound geographical variation: a rufous back in southeastern Africa, and a black back in central and western Africa. Black-backed birds vary from having white barring on the wings and tail to having completely black wings and tail. Juveniles are very drab and brown but can usually be identified by their association with adults. Found in forest, moist woodland, and gardens, often in patches of seeding grass. Usually in small flocks. Call is a descending “teew”. Similar to Bronze Mannikin but has an all-blue bill and never shows a brown back.

American White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
Extremely large and conspicuous. White with black wingtips. Very long, orange bill with pouch for scooping up fish. Forages in flocks, swimming together to concentrate fish. Often soars in flocks, infrequently flapping, during migration and when traveling between feeding sites.

Rufous-tailed Rock-Thrush
Monticola saxatilis
Distinctive, small, short-tailed thrush-like bird. Males are strikingly beautiful with bright blue-gray head, white back patch, and chestnut underparts. Females are reddish-brown and have a scaly appearance, with a tail pattern similar to males. Breeds on rocky mountain slopes and alpine meadows, usually above 1,500 m (5,000 ft). Usually shy but may be obvious when delivering its melodic Eurasian Blackbird-like song in flight.

Mountain Wagtail
Motacilla clara
Elegant, long-tailed bird with a gray back, pale underparts, and a black chest band. White outer tail is conspicuous in flight. Found along streams, mainly within montane forest. Feeds by walking along the ground, bobbing its tail constantly. Call is a buzzy “tseeet”. Song is a complex and beautiful jumble of high notes and trills. Similar to Cape Wagtail but has gray rather than brown upperparts and has more white in the wings and tail. Also similar to Gray Wagtail but lacks yellow on the underparts.
