Rufous-vented Yuhina
Yuhina occipitalis
Brightly-colored yuhina with a bright orange patch on the back of the crest. Brown wings, orange vent, and gray head. Similar to Whiskered and Stripe-throated Yuhinas, but without Whiskered’s prominent white throat and dark forecrest, and without Stripe-throated’s all-brown crest. Inhabits broadleaf forests at middle to high elevations, preferring oak stands with a dense rhododendron understory. Gives soft high-pitched twitters.

Giant Shrike
Lanius giganteus
A large and long-tailed shrike with dark gray upperparts, white underparts, a black mask, and white in the wing. The white patches in the black wings and tail are especially conspicuous in flight. Found at high elevations, in open habitats with stunted shrubs such as rhododendron. Descends to lower elevations during the winter. Often uses tall and exposed perches. Vocalizations include harsh rasping notes and more musical, liquid ones. Similar to Chinese Gray Shrike, but larger, with a darker gray back and no white eyebrow.

Tibetan Babax
Pterorhinus koslowi
A russet-brown babbler with pale eyes and a slightly curved black bill. Endemic to the eastern end of the Tibetan Plateau, where it inhabits areas with scrubby bushes and stunted trees. Generally, not as often seen around habitation as the larger, grayer Giant Babax (no range overlap), but will sometimes be seen taking handouts at monasteries. Forages on the ground, usually in pairs or small flocks.

Moheli Scops-Owl
Otus moheliensis
Small, compact dark owl with small ear tufts. The overall coloration is variable, and can be rufous or dark brown. Found in remnant lowland rainforest, secondary forest, and plantations on the island of Moheli, in the Comoros. The remarkable vocalizations include a raspy bark and a long, low-pitched growling hiss. Sometimes active and vocal during the day, especially the early morning and late afternoon. Easily identified, as the only other owl on Moheli is the much larger Barn Owl.
