Stripe-sided Rhabdornis
Rhabdornis mystacalis
A medium-sized, long-billed bird of primary lowland and foothill forest with a white throat and belly, brown wings and tail, a black mask, a dark crown finely streaked white, and black sides broadly streaked white. Sometimes joins mixed-species flocks, where it often investigates under bark with its long bill. Resembles the other rhabdornis species, but usually found at lower elevations, and has a dark crown streaked with white rather than a gray crown. Voice consists of high-pitched chips, sometimes sped up into a chatter.

Mussau Fantail
Rhipidura matthiae
A beautiful bird, mostly reddish with a black head and chest. Face is mostly bright white with a thick black eye mask. Cinnamon below. Long tail is often fanned. The only fantail in its range. Reliant on forest, but tolerates degraded areas. Song is an explosive melodic “pwit-pwit-chiddley-diddley.” Most common call is a soft, chattering “tchu-tchu-tchu.”

Colorful Puffleg
Eriocnemis mirabilis
Rare hummingbird known only from a tiny area of Colombia’s western Andes west of Popayán. Adult male is iridescent green with a blue belly, red vent, and white leg puffs. Female and young male are duller and often look all dark in the field apart from the leg puffs and white spot behind eye. Inhabits relatively undisturbed cloud forest and usually feeds at low levels.

White-bellied Fantail
Rhipidura euryura
As the name indicates, a dark gray fantail with a white belly. Also note white eyebrow and white-tipped tail feathers. Malaysian Pied Fantail is somewhat similar, but has a bright white throat, is darker overall, and favors different habitats. Inhabits foothill and montane forests, where it is generally uncommon. Forages actively, often associating with mixed flocks, moving through the lower and middle levels of forest. Often in dense, tangled vegetation. Song is a jumble of high whistled notes. Calls include a quiet “ch’reer” and pips.
