Chestnut-bellied Chat-Tyrant
Ochthoeca cinnamomeiventris
Small, attractive flycatcher that lives near rushing streams inside Andean cloud forest. Its white eyebrows really stand out and can look like headlights in the dark forest; plumage is otherwise gray and chestnut. Often gives a high, buzzy “zwheer” that can be heard above the sound rushing water. When agitated, also gives a series of “doo-wip” calls. Birds found south of extreme northern Peru are now considered a separate species, Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant.

Stripe-breasted Starthroat
Heliomaster squamosus
A large hummingbird found in forest and semiopen habitats such as savannas. Males have a green body bisected by a white stripe on the belly. Also note the dazzling metallic-pink gorget and blueish forehead on males. Females are grayish-green above and below with a white stripe down the center and a scaly-looking throat.
Black-headed Sibia

Somewhat recalling a darker, smaller Azure-winged Magpie, this medium-sized babbler is found in foothill to montane forests from central China to far southern Vietnam. Generally one of the most common birds in pristine hill forest throughout much of its range, and often a main component of mixed flocks. Typically moves through the canopy, though may descend lower, even occasionally to the ground when foraging.
Ocellated Antbird
Phaenostictus mcleannani
Spectacular, chunky forest-dweller; generally uncommon. Electric blue facial skin, rufous body, black throat, and pale scalloped pattern renders this antbird unlikely to be confused with any other species. Larger than other antbirds in range. Can be difficult to see well; found close to the ground in mature forest, usually in pairs or small flocks following an army ant swarm. Listen for descending, scolding call. Sexes alike.
