Northern Sooty-Woodpecker

Large, dark sea duck. Breeding males have a colorful bill and white patches on the nape and forehead. Females and first-year males are dark brown with white patches on the cheek and face. Note large, thick-based bill to help separate from female White-winged Scoter. Breeds on lakes and ponds in northern Canada and Alaska; winters in flocks in harbors, bays, and other coastal waters, where dives for mussels and other aquatic invertebrates. Uncommon to rare inland, especially in migration. Frequently mixes with other sea duck species, especially eiders and scoters.

An attractive flycatcher of forest understory from the lowlands to low mountains in northern and central Luzon. Male has a deep blue throat, chest and upperparts, blackish face, and pale blue forehead and eyebrow. Female has a brown back, rufous wings and tail, gray head, orange throat and pale eyebrow. Male is somewhat similar to Blue-and-white Flycatcher, but Blue-breasted Blue has orange-fringed white belly. Female somewhat similar to Mugimaki female but has a gray head. Song is a high-pitch, shrill “tsiiiiiiiii!” followed by a variety of lower notes.

Pretty bushshrike that has four different morphs. These vary by the color of the underparts: white with a pinkish breast, a black breast and yellow belly, yellow with an orange center of the breast, or red with a yellow belly. Found in forest, mainly at middle and high elevations. Often joins mixed feeding flocks. The most common vocalizations are repeated bell-like notes and low rasps. Variable, but in all morphs, separated from other bushshrikes by black extending above the bill and by the lack of a pale eye stripe.
