Northern Scrub-Flycatcher
Sublegatus arenarum
Confusing flycatcher, fairly small and nondescript. Look for the short bill and round head that can be raised into a slight crest. Dull grayish-brown head shows only a hint of a paler line above eye. Chest is paler gray, which contrasts with the pale yellow belly. Wingbars are present but not bold. Larger and lankier than a beardless-tyrannulet. Looks rather like a diminutive Myiarchus flycatcher. The clear whistled call is a good clue. Found singly or in pairs, usually in scrubby second growth.

Yellow-fronted Parrot
Poicephalus flavifrons
A chunky, mid-sized parrot with a big bill and a short tail. Mostly dark green, with a large yellow patch on the face that is absent in immatures. An Ethiopian endemic that is found at middle elevations in a variety of woodland and forest habitats. The calls are thin, high-pitched screeches. Similar to Meyer’s Parrot, but there is little overlap in range, and Yellow-fronted is separated by the lack of yellow shoulders and by the green upperparts.

Wedge-tailed Jery
Hartertula flavoviridis
Small, dark understory tetraka. Has yellowish underparts and a gray ear patch. Active bird that often pokes into clusters of dead leaves. Frequently joins flocks with tetrakas and other birds. Most common vocalization is an explosive up-and-down series of high-pitched notes. Larger, longer-tailed, and with darker underparts than other jeries. Unlike Cryptic Warbler, inhabits the understory, is much darker, and has a gray ear patch. Unlike Rand’s Warbler, has an indistinct eye-stripe and a greenish back.

Black-backed Water-Tyrant
Fluvicola albiventer
Medium-sized flycatcher, usually seen walking on the ground around marshy areas, lakes, and rivers. Mostly white below and on the face contrasting with a black crown and back, a white rump and two white wingbars. Sweeps its tail conspicuously from side to side. The call is a sharp and short “tic.”
