Geelvink Fruit-Dove

Ptilinopus speciosus

Localized endemic of islands in West Papua’s Geelvink Bay, including Biak and Numfor. Males have a large, bright “fried egg” yellow-and-white patch on the chest and a hot pink patch on the belly. Otherwise mostly green, aside from yellow undertail. Females are green, with yellow on the undertail and belly. Found in lowland rainforest. The song is an accelerating series of two-part “hoo-wooo” notes given in a series, usually of 7-9 notes. Similar to White-breasted Fruit-Dove, but smaller overall and smaller-billed, and males further separated by their distinctive breast pattern.

识别特征

The male has a dark green head and upperparts, a mauve belly, a bright yellow breast band bordered by white, and bold lime-yellow bare skin around the eyes. The female and juveniles are almost entirely green with yellow fringes to the belly feathers.

Black-headed Siskin

Black-headed Siskin

Spinus notatus

Attractive small finch of highlands and foothills, mainly in drier habitats. Favors pine-oak forests, edges, and adjacent weedy clearings. Usually in small groups, which may associate with other finches and small seed-eating birds, especially when coming to drink. Adult is boldly patterned black and yellow with black hood and big yellow wing patch. Immature duller, without black hood; resembles female Lesser Goldfinch but note the yellow wing patches and pointed gray bill.

Mauritius Gray White-eye

Mauritius Gray White-eye

Zosterops mauritianus

An unusual white-eye that lacks white around the eye, but has a puffy white rump patch. Mostly pale gray with a white throat and buff flanks. Found in virtually all habitats with woody vegetation on the island of Mauritius. A conspicuous, sociable bird that is usually found in flocks. Vaguely similar to the rare Mauritius White-eye, but easily separated by the lack of a white eye-ring and the lack of olive-green in the plumage. The song is a repetitive series of warbling notes, typical of a white-eye. The calls are “tew” notes and squeals.

Black-faced Laughingthrush

Black-faced Laughingthrush

Trochalopteron affine

Shy, beautifully patterned laughinghtrush of mid to high elevations. Note bold black-and-white head pattern, golden wing and tail panels, and mostly unmarked brown on the rest of the body. Typically found as pairs during the breeding season and small groups in the winter, in the dense undergrowth of hill and mountain forests. Song like many other laughingthrushes, one to three inflected or quavering whistles. Calls include churring, rattling, and slurred squeaking.
