Red-chested Sunbird
Cinnyris erythrocercus
A slim, curve-billed sunbird in which males and females are very different. Males are mostly black and dark green, with a red band across the underparts and elongated central tail feathers. Females are plain gray-brown above and pale with heavy dark markings below. Found in a wide variety of moist habitats, including wetlands, savanna, scrub, woodland, and gardens. Similar to Beautiful Sunbird, but breeding males are separated by the lack of extensive yellow in their belly band and females by being more streaked below. Female similar to female Marico Sunbird, but note dark throat patch and less distinct pale eyebrow. Song is a typical sunbird high-pitched jumble; also gives chipping calls.

Whistling Heron
Syrigma sibilatrix
Multicolored heron, with a dark cap, pale neck and a pinkish bill with a black tip that contrasts with its blue eyerings. Often found in drier areas than other herons such as natural grasslands and agriculture areas, but also sometimes found in marshes. Unlike other herons, it is rather vocal; often uttering a distinctive metallic whistle.

Perija Tapaculo
Scytalopus perijanus
The only tapaculo found in the Perijá Mountains, which straddle the Colombia-Venezuela border north of the main chain of the Andes. Adult is gray with brown rump and lower underparts. Female is slightly washed with brown and young birds are heavily barred. Skulks in cloud forest understory as well as dense stands of bushes above tree line. Typical song is a very long series of rising, frog-like trills.

Curl-crested Manucode
Manucodia comrii
A large, crow-sized bird of wooded habitats on the southeast islands. Black overall with blue iridescence on the shoulder, and purple on the flight feathers and tail. Note the distinctive, dorsally-flattened tail with folded tips and feathered bulge on the head. The only other manucode in range is Trumpet Manucode, but Curl-crested lacks the loose feathers around the neck. Similar size to Torresian Crow but Curl-crested has a dark eye. Song, a remarkable, descending series of hollow notes given while tilting backwards, then rolling its whole body up and over.
