Varied Triller

This striking lapwing is best identified by its long yellow wattles, white belly, and gray head split down the center by a broad white crown stripe. In flight, the distinctive wings are almost entirely white with black tips. It prefers breeding and foraging on large permanent rivers with extensive sand banks but will also wander to smaller streams and pans. It utters a loud “kriiip” call when alarmed or defending its territory. The similar Wattled Lapwing differs from White-headed Lapwing by having a dark belly and red-based wattles.

A very small, warbler-like greenbul with an olive-green back, pale underparts, a gray cap and nape, and a pale eye. Found in lowland forest and lush woodland. Often joins mixed-species flocks. Very similar to Usambara Greenbul, but found at lower elevations and paler overall, without an olive-green wash to the crown and the back of the head. Similar in overall coloration to Yellow-streaked Greenbul, but much smaller, with a pale eye. The call is a rough chatter that is often mixed with the song: an accelerating, syncopated series of low nasal notes. 

Large, bulky hummingbird with slightly arched black bill. Favors forest edge and open areas with scattered tall trees. Often perches and feeds high in canopy, but also feeds low on occasions and will visit feeders. Male (some females similar) solidly dark, deep green overall with black throat, purplish tail. Female and immature have broad dark stripe down center of throat and breast, white tail corners. Immature also has rusty mottling along sides of throat and breast.
