Bay-chested Warbling Finch

Small, chunky seabird of the northwestern Pacific, usually seen at sea, sometimes near land. Breeding adult is chocolate brown with scaled brown-and-white underparts. Wintering adult is gray above and white below with thin white “spectacles” and patchy white splotches on the sides and back. Nonbreeding Spectacled Guillemot perhaps similar but is significantly larger, with much neater black-and-white plumage (and more extensive white on neck), more prominent forehead, and much longer bill.

An unusual and beautiful bird that is rarely seen, even by those expressly looking for it. Note the buffy underparts, green back, red undertail, and bold facial pattern. Found on the floor of forest and dense thicket. Very shy, remaining motionless for long periods. At least some populations are migratory within Africa. The call is an explosive, liquid “phwit.” Can only be confused with Green-breasted Pitta, but separated by the lack of a dark-green breast.

Small flycatcher with a broad flat bill, although the bill shape can be difficult to see. A rare inhabitant of the undergrowth of humid forests and old second growth. Note the white spot on an olive-brown crown, a prominent buff eyebrow, and pale ear patch. The back is olive-brown in contrast to the cinnamon wings, white throat, and buff belly. The call is a very sharp whistled “tchew-tchew.”
