Little Green Sunbird

Anthreptes seimundi

Tiny, drab warbler-like sunbird. The bill is slightly curved and partially pink. Also note the pale eye-ring. Found in the canopy and mid-story of humid forest at low and middle elevations, usually in pairs or small groups. The most common call is a simple, high-pitched “tseeet”. Very similar to Bates’s Sunbird, but has a less curved bill and a more distinct eye-ring. Distinguished from females of other species of sunbirds by the pink on the bill and the green rather than blackish tail.

Streak-backed Canastero

Streak-backed Canastero

Asthenes wyatti

Small, brownish bird with a long, spiky tail. Inhabits grassland and dense scrub at high elevations from western Venezuela to northern Argentina; southern populations were formerly split as Puna Canastero. Rather nondescript; plain brown underparts and dark streaks on upperparts help distinguish it from other similar canasteros. Also note some rufous in wings and tail. Sometimes shows tiny orange chin patch. Forages on the ground, where it is hard to see, but occasionally ascends to a more open perch to rest or sing. Song is a fast, high pitched, rattling trill, starting a bit slower and accelerating.

Arrowhead Piculet

Arrowhead Piculet

Picumnus minutissimus

Common piculet of coastal forests. Note short-tailed profile, large feet, and cone-shaped bill. Found in mangroves, gardens, abandoned plantations, and disturbed areas. Creeps quietly through vine tangles and bores into dead twigs at lower and middle levels. Similar to Golden-spangled and White-barred Piculets, but Arrowhead has chevron-shaped spots (not barring) on the breast and belly, and is strictly confined to coastal habitats.

Tepui Goldenthroat

Tepui Goldenthroat

Polytmus milleri

Medium-sized green hummingbird with a rounded, white-tipped tail and decurved black bill, found only in the tepui region of Venezuela and Guyana. Female is very similar to male but with some spotting on the green underparts. Common in dry to humid grassy areas with small trees or scrub, forest edges, gallery forest, and morichales. Mostly alone, feeding at flowers and often catching insects. Voice is a series of loud and high pitch “tsit” notes.
