Loveridge's Sunbird

Fairly large antpitta of montane habitats. Rusty orange with a white throat and a lighter white or gray belly. Forages on the ground in dense undergrowth in upper montane forest, elfin forest, and humid scrub above the treeline. Often a fairly common bird, but reclusive and much more often heard than seen; listen for an even-paced and slightly descending series of a few whistled notes: “pee, per, pur,” easily imitated.

Tiny manakin of Amazonian rainforest. Dull olive-green with a lighter, yellowish belly, a short tail, and dark gray legs. Hard to see as it perches in the midstory of rainforest, but it is frequently heard, a sneezy “cool-whip!” Smaller than other manakins and typically forages higher in the middle levels of forest. Prefers mature rainforest, both in upland and floodplain areas.

Conspicuous inhabitant of woods, forests, parks, gardens, and hedges in farmland. Often visits bird feeders and uses nest boxes. Plumage is distinctive, with white cheeks surrounded by a black cap and bib. Male has a broader black stripe down belly than the female, and the juvenile (seen in summer–early autumn) has yellowish wash to face and drabber plumage overall. Underparts are bright yellow throughout much of range, but “Turkestan Tit” of Central Asia has a white belly. Appreciably larger and more boldly patterned than Eurasian Blue Tit, which often occurs alongside it. Listen for its distinctive high-pitched up-and-down song: “tsee-dee-tsee-dee-tsee-dee” and chattering scolds.
