Brown-backed Parrotlet

Gray seabird shaped like a football. Breeding plumage shows white belly and thin white eyebrow and mustache. Distinctive stout orange bill with pale vertical protrusion at base. Nonbreeding birds have a plainer face and lack "horn" on bill; juveniles have gray bill. Longer bill than other auklets with a flatter head. Breeds on offshore islands; otherwise found at sea, usually alone. Dives underwater for fish.

Massive bird of prey, restricted to mature forest and always rare. Enormous talons. Adult is dark gray above, paler below, with obvious dark breast band. Note more obvious black-and-white barring on wings in flight to help separate it from Crested Eagle. Juvenile has whiter head than adult and no breast band; very similar to Crested Eagle but note longer crest with two points (separated in the middle). Feeds on monkeys and sloths. Usually seen perched in the canopy or flying across a road or river, does not soar.

A medium-sized yellowish-olive bird with a long tail. A scarce endemic that is restricted to a few granitic islands of the Seychelles, where it is found in scrub, woodland, and mangroves. Vaguely similar to Seychelles White-eye, but larger, longer-tailed, paler below, and without bold white spectacles. The cheerful song is a quick series of several musical warbling notes in an up-and-down pattern. Also gives scratchy call notes.
