Brown-backed Parrotlet
Touit melanonotus
Small parrot with a short, squared tail that has red outer tail feathers with a black band across the tips. Mostly green with a brown patch on the back and pale gray flanks. Note the orange eyering. Inhabits the canopy of humid forests including on lower montane slopes. Golden-tailed Parrotlet, which is more of a lowland species lacks the eyering, has more of an orangey face, and has a less sharp call than Brown-backed Parrotlet.

The brown-backed parrotlet (Touit melanonotus) also known as the black-backed parrotlet, the black-eared parrotlet, and Wied's parrotlet, is a small (15 cm or 6 in) green parrot found in south-eastern Brazil from Bahia to southern São Paulo. It has a dark brown mantle and back, brown ear coverts, and red outer tail with back tips. They frequent humid forest from 500–1,000 m (1,600–3,300 ft) (occasionally down to sea level), and are mostly found in small flocks of 3–20 birds.

Bar-winged Wood-Wren
Henicorhina leucoptera
Well-named wren found only in stunted cloud forest in the eastern Andes of northern Peru and border regions of southeastern Ecuador. Small, with a short tail and a striped face. Very similar to Gray-breasted Wood-Wren, but has distinct wingbars and a richer, slightly lower-pitched song. Both species occur almost side-by-side at some locations. Usually encountered in pairs that hop and flit around in the forest understory.

Small tapaculo found in the understory of humid forests usually with bamboo, where it is generally very hard to see. Males are uniformly dark gray, while females are dark brown above and dark gray below. The song is a long, fast, and repetitive series of up to 30 mechanical “tip-tip-tip” notes.
Unspotted Saw-whet Owl
Aegolius ridgwayi
Rare, small, and compact cute owl of humid pine-oak and evergreen forest in the highlands of Chiapas and Central America. Strictly nocturnal and usually difficult to see. Most often detected by tooting song, which is prolonged, but its song has a variably hesitant cadence. Unmistakable in range, if seen well: note the big head with white eyebrows, golden eyes, and plain buffy underparts.
