Rusty-breasted Wheatear
Oenanthe frenata
A chunky brownish wheatear of mountain habitats. Note the white eyebrow, black mask, clean white throat, and cinnamon underparts. The tail is mostly black with a white base and rump, forming a thick “T” pattern that is conspicuous in flight. Found in montane grassland, heathland, and cultivated areas. Very similar to Heuglin’s Wheater, but there is little overlap in range, and Rusty-breasted is larger and paler, with a much whiter throat. The song is a long, complex mix of many different components, sometimes given in a flight display.

Small swallow dark above, pale below, with grayish rump and notched tail. Call is a pleasant twittering, unlike harsh call of Fairy Martin, which has paler rump and rusty crown. Found throughout Australia in many habitats, including urban areas.
Principe Golden-Weaver
Ploceus princeps
The only weaver on Príncipe, where it is endemic. Typically yellowish with an olive back: male has a golden-orange wash to the head, while female has a plainer face and a white belly. Juvenile is like the female, but duller. Found in pairs and small groups; abundant in almost all habitats on the island. Song is an accelerated fizzling concluding with a wheeze: “pssht-pssht-pshhtt-dzrrt-dzrrt-dzt-dzt-dzr-dzr-dzr-dzr-dzr.”
Black-spotted Barbet
Capito niger
Medium-sized sluggish bird of rainforest canopy. From below note size and sharply demarcated red throat on both sexes. Also occurs in secondary forests and overgrown plantations, sometimes in urban areas. Often seen in pairs at fruiting trees or with mixed-species flocks. Forages slowly and deliberately, feeding on fruit and insects. Often-heard call is a low-pitched, doubled hoot, repeated in series.
