Purple-capped Fruit-Dove
Ptilinopus ponapensis
Colorful forest dove found solely on the Caroline Islands of Chuuk and Pohnpei; the only fruit-dove on these islands. Adult has a bright purple cap, leaf-green back and wings, and a broad lemon-yellow tail tip. Juvenile is green all over, but with darker wings. Forages in trees and bushes, feeding primarily on fruit. Song is a series of coos that accelerate before tapering off quietly.

Buff-breasted Tody-Tyrant
Hemitriccus mirandae
Unobtrusive, drab little brownish flycatcher. Olive-backed, pale below, with the head looking disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body. Note the buff lores and eye-ring. Inhabits remnant humid forest patches at higher elevations. Sings a sharp series of “kit-kit-kit-kiit-kiit-kiiit-kit” notes.

Ringed Warbling Finch
Microspingus torquatus
Striking tanager of open woodland, consisting of two relatively distinctive subspecies. Distinguished from other warbling-finches in range by its black breast band. Nominate torquatus is a resident of the southern Bolivian Andes, especially open scrub and cactus forest of the dry valleys. Migratory pectoralis shows a thicker breast band and darker undertail coverts, and breeds in the Pampas, Monte, and northern Chaco dry forests in north central Argentina, dispersing north to lowlands of W Paraguay and SE Bolivia.

Large Frogmouth
Batrachostomus auritus
Sizeable nightbird with deep black eyes and wispy pale whiskers above its eyes that give it the appearance of a distinguished professor. Warm, pale, brown overall with bright white spots on the wings. Despite its size, this lowland rainforest giant can be cryptic and difficult to find; roosts under cover by day and hunts from a perch by night. Favors undisturbed primary forest, but also occasionally in disturbed areas. Song is a mellow rolling tremolo; calls include barks and screeches.
