Flammulated Pygmy-Tyrant
Hemitriccus flammulatus
A small and nondescript flycatcher that is nowhere near as exciting-looking as the name suggests. Generally found in large bamboo thickets, but can also occur in other viney tangles in forest gaps and edges. Overall dingy olive upperparts and faintly streaked brownish underparts are fairly distinctive; most similar species in range are either yellower or grayer, not brownish. Most often found by its voice, a short series of hollow “pip” notes.

The flammulated bamboo tyrant is found in the headwater areas of the Amazon Basin in southeastern Peru and northern Bolivia; also neighboring Brazilian states in the border regions, of Acre, Rondônia, and Mato Grosso.<p>It is found in the upstream half of the Ucayali River in Peru; in Bolivia it ranges from the Guaporé River with Brazil, and to the northwest all the tributaries to the northeast flowing Amazon Basin Madeira River.

Confusing forest species, rare and difficult to find among mixed flocks. Typically stays at middle levels. Overall dull olive with yellower underparts and proportionally large gray head. Most noteworthy are the stout bill and large eye with a thin whitish eyering.
Chestnut-throated Monal-Partridge
Tetraophasis obscurus
Large modestly-colored terrestrial bird of open woodlands, scrublands, and meadows in alpine areas. Brown overall with a peaked head, chestnut throat, and bright red skin around the eye. Body intricately patterned, with fine black spotting on breast and white edging on wings and flanks. Similar Szechenyi’s Partridge does not overlap in range. Song is a messy cacophony of twanging, nasal, and slurred notes.
Crimson-rumped Waxbill
Estrilda rhodopyga
Small gray-brown finch with fiery reddish patches all over the body. Combination of bright red eyerbrow and similarly colored rump patch distinguishes this species from other waxbills. Inhabits both dry and wet areas with extensive tall and grassy vegetation. Associates with other waxbills, as well as other species of estrildid finches. Native to eastern Africa; introduced to Singapore and parts of Japan.
