Watkins's Antpitta
Grallaria watkinsi
Medium-sized antpitta with limited range in dry woodlands in southwest Ecuador and northwest Peru. Fairly common and unmistakable within range and habitat. Typical antpitta shape: plump and short-tailed with long legs, like a grapefruit on stilts. Brown above with bold streaking on underparts, messy-looking face, and a tawny crown. Looks like a washed-out version of Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, which occurs at higher elevations (and typically in wetter forests). Voice is distinctive: a descending series of rich whistles ending with a longer rising note. Usually secretive, but can be detected as it noisily hops through dry leaf litter.

Plain-throated Antwren
Isleria hauxwelli
Small, short-tailed antwren of rainforest understory. Forages low to the ground in undergrowth of mature rainforest, often around tree fall gaps. Males are even gray with white spots on the wings and tail; females are brown above and reddish buff below with tan spots on the wings and tail. Listen for a slightly accelerating series of raspy, rising whistles given at a pace of about one note every second.
Yellow-breasted Bunting
Emberiza aureola
Large bunting of agricultural fields, meadows, and wetlands; formerly gathered in immense congregations in winter but now rare due to trapping. Breeding male stunning, with a black face, deep chestnut-brown crown, nape, wings, and back, white wingbars, and bright yellow underparts with chestnut breast band. Nonbreeding male is a faded version of this plumage. Female streaky brown above, yellowish with streaks below, with facial pattern reminiscent of Yellow-browed Bunting, but much larger, with a strong yellow wash to the undersides.
Spectacled Warbler
Curruca conspicillata
Small and slim with a strong rusty-brown wing panel, resembles a small and beautified Greater Whitethroat. The male has a gray hood, white puffy throat, black in front of the eye, conspicuous white eyering, and white mustache. Females best told from Greater Whitethroat by short wings and dark centers to the tertials. Breeds in low bushes and scrub including salt flats; winters in similar habitats as well as tamarisk thickets and oases. Shy, but given its choice of habitat, often has nowhere to really hide. Normally sings from the tops of bushes or in flight, giving tuneful whistles with harsher, rattled notes.
