Grande Comore Bulbul
Hypsipetes parvirostris
A medium-sized greenish-gray bird with a black cap and a carrot-colored bill, endemic to the middle and high elevations of the mountains of Grand Comoro. Found in humid forest and in adjacent plantations and secondary areas. Often in small, noisy groups. Very similar in appearance to Madagascar Bulbul, and they overlap at moderate elevations, especially in degraded habitats. Grand Comoro Bulbul is separated by the slightly larger size, the olive tint to the plumage, especially on the back, the yellowish tint to the underparts, and the paler belly and undertail. Its song is an unmusical series of rattling and scraping notes, often given from a high perch, similar to Madagascar Bulbul’s, but slightly lower-pitched and more metallic.

Bar-breasted Piculet
Picumnus aurifrons
Small, greenish-brown piculet. Light olive brown, with horizontal barring on the breast changing to vertical streaking on the belly, and a black-and-white speckled crown. Males have a yellow forehead patch. Forages singly or in pairs around the midstory and canopy of secondary rainforest, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks with tanagers and other species. Its song is a high, two- or three-note “sweet, sweet,” similar to the songs of other piculets.
Burnt-neck Eremomela
Eremomela usticollis
A small, plain warbler that is ash-gray above and pale buff below, with a whitish throat and a distinctive pale-lemon eye. In adults, the diagnostic rusty ear-patch and small bar across the breast are often indistinct, and in winter they are frequently absent; juveniles also lack these features. Pairs and small groups are unobtrusive in stands of thorn trees in dry, mixed, and broadleaf woodland, where they may join mixed-species flocks. The species is most frequently detected by its high-pitched, fast-paced trill vocalizations. The similar Red-capped Crombec differs from Burnt-neck Eremomela by having a short tail and a dark eye.
Spotted Owlet
Athene brama
A small uncrested owl with a round head and a short tail. It is grayish-brown overall with white spots above while its underparts are white with brown bars. Note the distinctive white eyebrows and neck-band. Often active at dawn and dusk when it utters a loud “chirurr-chirurr-chirurr” laugh in addition to a variety of high-pitched squeals and whistles. Inhabits all kinds of open habitats but avoids dense forest and wetter regions.
