Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon
Columba delegorguei
Blackish, short-tailed, medium-sized pigeon. Male has a distinctive white mark on the neck. Female is plainer but usually shows some rufous on the back of the neck. Found mostly in moist montane forest, though does occur locally in coastal forest, especially in South Africa. Inconspicuous bird that spends most of its time in the forest canopy. Song is a “bouncing call” series of low hoots. Plain female is similar to Lemon Dove, but is rarely found in the understory, and has a dark face.

Kea
Nestor notabilis
The world's only true alpine parrot, found only on the South Island of New Zealand. Large, with olive-green plumage. Note scarlet underwings visible in flight. Females are smaller than males with shorter bills. Juveniles have a yellow eye-ring and a paler crown. Gives a distinct loud “keee-aaa” call, mostly in flight. Very inquisitive toward people and their cars within the mountain ranges, at ski fields, at huts, and along mountain roads. Distinguished from New Zealand Kaka by blue-green flight feathers, larger size, and alpine habitat.

Araguaia Spinetail
Synallaxis simoni
Typical spinetail with a long spiky tail, a grayish-brown head, bright cinnamon wings and tail, a white throat, and pale buffy underparts. Sexes similar. Limited range near the Araguaia River in Brazil, where it inhabits the understory of gallery forest. The song is a sharp “keeeu”, often repeated.

Spot-breasted Laughingthrush
Garrulax merulinus
Dark brown with long black streaks down its throat, this laughingthrush gives the impression of a large, blown-up bush warbler. Like many other laughingthrushes, skulks deep in shrubby undergrowth both within forests and at forest edges. Makes up for its unassuming appearance with a beautiful and lengthy song of musical notes. Not as social as some other laughingthrushes, typically moving singly, in pairs, or at most in small flocks.
