Malaita Cicadabird
Edolisoma tricolor
The male is a striking tricolored cicadabird: pitch black below and on the face, with a medium-gray cap and back, and a pale-gray bar on the shoulder. The tail is also black. The female is powder-gray with a paler shoulder patch. Found in forest only on the island of Malaita, in the Solomon Islands. Male is similar to Central Melanesian, but distinguished by its paler upperparts and darker underparts. Call is a rasping, upslurred “vvr-reeeoo.”

Masked Woodswallow
Artamus personatus
Chunky bird with broad, triangular wings and short, decurved bill. Male dark gray above, pale below, with a black face and throat and very pale underwings. Female with fainter mask and slight rusty wash to breast. Often forages very high up in enormous flocks, sometimes mixed in with White-browed Woodswallows.
Fan-tailed Berrypecker
Melanocharis versteri
A fairly small, long-tailed bird of montane forest. Male has black upperparts, gray underparts with white tufts on the sides and white in the base of the outer tail feathers. Female is olive, with yellowish tufts on the sides and a dotted bar in the base of the outer tail feathers. Female is similar to female Papuan Whipbird, but Fan-tailed Berrypecker has a paler belly, side streak, white in the tail, and pale around the base of the bill. Voice, a repeated, falling, nasal “weh!” and a high-pitch clicking call.
Pacific Swallow
Hirundo javanica
Common swallow of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, often in cities and towns as well as above fields, lakes, and forests. Adult iridescent blue above and grayish buff below, with orangish throat and forehead. Similar to Barn Swallow, which has longer outer tail feathers and a dark line separating the throat and breast, lacking in Pacific. Frequently perches on telephone lines, often with other swallow species.
