Black-crowned Waxbill

A nocturnal inhabitant of open arid woodlands and thornscrub. Perches on ground from which it makes floppy and erratic flight upon its long wings in pursuit of insects. During the day it nestles in shaded leaf litter, wherein its cryptic coloration hides it well. Both the Hispaniolan Nightjar and Chuck-wills-widow are considerably larger, darker, and lack the Least Pauraque’s white terminal tail band. Calls include a low scratchy “wuck-wuck-wuck-wuck,” a low-pitched rising and trilled “tooooooeeeeeee,” and a similarly low-pitched trilled “oo-weee-oo,” with emphasis on middle syllable. The calls of the Hispaniolan Nightjar is a lower pitched “toooooeeeeeo.”

A relatively small and inconspicuous mountain-tanager found in the upper subtropical and temperate zones of the Andes. Blue above with a yellow belly and black head. Buffy breast band is not super conspicuous. Look for unique spangled blue eyebrow. Sexes alike. Found alone or in pairs, typically moving quietly through the understory of forest and edge. Often follows mixed-species flocks.

A large, dull-green pigeon with a thick pale bill and a gray forehead. The dark olive-green and maroon wings have contrasting yellow lines below the shoulders, and the undertail is dull yellow with green patches. Often flocks in large numbers, and feeds in the canopy on fruits and figs. The song is a distinctive low, nasal whistle.
