Black Lory

A long-tailed green parrot with a light olive hood, an orange bill, and a yellowish-green underside. Note the yellow bar on the underwing in flight. Juveniles have a dark brownish-black bill. Gregarious, found in pairs or groups high up within forest and savanna in the lowlands, hills, and mountains in its limited range in the eastern Lesser Sundas. Smaller than Marigold Lorikeet, with a lighter colored head, and lacks Marigold’s broad yellow collar. Gives characteristic lorikeet screeches: “eek.”

A rather small owl with lightly spotted brown upperparts and creamy underparts thickly barred with reddish brown. Inhabits forests from lowlands up into the highlands. Unlikely to be confused with any other species in its very limited range. Listen for its monotonous “poot” calls, sometimes given in duet. Formerly lumped with West Solomons Owl, Malaita Owl, and Makira Owl under the name “Solomons Boobook.”

Small leaf-green barbet, endemic to Java and Bali. Note bright sky-blue patches on face, shoulders, and undertail, as well as a bright yellow patch below each eye. Inhabits lowland and foothill forests, as well as forest edge. Like other barbets, can be difficult to see: listen for its song, an insect-like series of notes, given in groups of four. Also gives a high “whew’ew” and sharp pips.
