Olive Honeyeater

Lichmera argentauris

A nondescript sparrow-sized songbird with a slender, downcurved bill. Entirely olive-green above and uniform pale gray below, but note head pattern, which includes a prominent whitish smudge on the cheeks and dull bare skin below the eye. Juvenile has a pink facial patch. Singles, pairs, or groups inhabit scrubland, wooded areas, and coconut plantations in lowlands. Confined to islets in the Moluccas and to West Papua, where it is readily identified by its head pattern. Harsh, squeaky vocalizations include “tchew” and “grrt” notes and “chi-witchoo” or “witch-oo” phrases.

Yapacana Antbird

Yapacana Antbird

Aprositornis disjuncta

Odd, slender antbird with a rather long bill. Males are gray above and white below with white spots on the wings; females have rusty underparts and lack wing spots. Found across a restricted range in the understory of stunted campina forests. Does not generally associate with mixed-species flocks, but may sometimes attend army-ant swarms. The song is a series of harsh notes with short “pips” in between: “grrrrrrr-pipip-grrrrrrrr-pip.”

Beautiful Sunbird

Beautiful Sunbird

Cinnyris pulchellus

A slim, long-billed sunbird in which breeding males and females are very different. Breeding males are mostly dark green with a red-and-yellow band across the underparts. Females are plain, with gray-brown upperparts and white underparts tinged with yellow. Found in a wide variety of open habitats including savanna, woodland, and gardens. Similar to Black-bellied Sunbird, but breeding males are separated by the more extensive yellow in their belly band, and females by their reduced streaking below. Little or no range overlap with Gorgeous Sunbird, but if in doubt the green belly of breeding male Beautiful Sunbird will identify it. The common call is a quiet chipping, and the song is a high-pitched jumble typical of sunbirds.

Javan Heleia

Javan Heleia

Heleia javanica

Small warbler-like bird with a gray head, yellowish-green body, and varying amounts of white around the eye; lacks the well-defined white “spectacles” of typical white-eyes. Birds in the montane regions of far western and far eastern Java have a dark patch between the eye and the base of the bill, and minimal white on the face (a full thin eyering in eastern birds, and a white crescent under the eye in western birds), while birds in central Java have a large but poorly-defined white patch around the eye. Forages actively in wooded and forested areas from foothills to mountaintops, often in pairs or groups. Joins mixed-species flocks. Song is a bright series of whistled notes; calls include rattling, high-pitched “tchrr”s and sharply falling whistles.
