Western Bluebill
Spermophaga haematina
A stout-billed, boldly patterned finch of forest understory and overgrown areas near the forest edge, often found near water. Can occur alone or in mixed-species flocks. Note the blue bill, the bright red underparts, and the black back. Males have black heads and bellies, whereas females have red faces and white-spotted black bellies. Western Bluebill is the only bluebill or seedcracker in which the male has a black head. Calls include high-pitched whistles: “psiu.” Songs include longer series of clear whistles with varying pitch.

Yellow-bellied Flyrobin
Cryptomicroeca flaviventris
Small mostly grayish songbird with an upright posture and short bill. Note bright yellow belly and small patch of whiter feathers on the throat. Typically found low in dense growth, preferring areas of native habitat including stunted forest and edges. Pleasant song a combination of higher-pitched wheezing whistled notes and lower chiming warbles.
Musk Duck
Biziura lobata
Large and chunky stiff-tailed diving duck with a heavy triangular bill. Floats very low in the water. Both sexes are dark grayish, but male has an obvious lobe of skin dangling from its chin. Usually observed on the water, regularly diving while feeding. Bill is much shorter and heavier than Blue-billed Duck.
Handsome Fruiteater
Pipreola formosa
A rotund, striking bird, medium-sized with green and yellow body and large white wing spots. Male has black head, yellow underparts, and blurred red chest patch; female lacks black head and shows yellowish underparts with green barring. Both sexes short-tailed with orange eyes and small orange bill. Often alone or in pairs, perching quietly in the low to high levels of the forest. Fairly common in humid forests in foothills or at higher elevations. Not as vocal as other fruiteaters. Female distinguished from Golden-breasted Fruiteater primarily by green barring (not streaking) on underparts. Endemic to the Coastal Cordillera of Venezuela.
