Regal Sunbird
Cinnyris regius
Medium-sized sunbird in which males are colorful, green, yellow, and red, and females drab brownish. Found in and around Albertine Rift montane forest. The typical vocalizations include a harsh “seet” and a rapid, jumbled song. The male is distinctive, and is separated from all similar sunbirds by the yellow on the underparts. Females are very similar to female double-collared sunbirds, but are paler and more yellow-ish. Female separated from female Rockefeller’s Sunbird by its lack of a distinct pale eyestripe.

The regal sunbird is a small species. The adult male has head and upper parts an iridescent golden-green, dark wings and tail and a boldly-marked red and yellow breast and belly. The adult female has dull olive upper parts, with yellowish, faintly streaked underparts. The male is distinctive, but the female could be confused with the female Rockefeller's sunbird (Cinnyris rockefelleri), though this has a paler throat. The female Rwenzori double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and the female northern double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris reichenowi) are also similar, but these have greener upper parts and yellower underparts; another similar species is the variable sunbird (Cinnyris venustus), but the regal can be recognised by the upper parts being more olive and the underparts a more uniform yellowish-olive.

The regal sunbird's range spans the entire Albertine Rift montane forests (from Uganda to Tanzania), where it occurs between 1,500 and 3,100 m (4,900 and 10,200 ft) above sea level. Its habitat includes evergreen mountain forest, mixed forest, secondary growth forest, scrubland and bamboo.

Sillem's Rosefinch
Carpodacus sillemi
This mysterious and range-restricted rosefinch of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau looks more like a mountain-finch than like other rosefinches. Male is pale brown with a whitish belly and a rusty brown face. Female is streaky gray with pale underparts and a yellow bill. Only known from remote open mountain plateaus at and above 5000 meters above sea level.
South Island Saddleback
Philesturnus carunculatus
A medium-sized songbird endemic to New Zealand, confined to predator-free offshore islands and South Island mainland sanctuaries. Glossy black plumage with distinct chestnut saddle across the back, which gives the bird its name. Note the bright reddish-orange wattles on either side of the bill. Juveniles have smaller wattles and are chocolate brown for their first year. Listen for distinct calls resembling a blaring “cheeet ta-chet ta-chet ta-chet” sound. Constantly moves noisily as it restlessly forages on the floor and through the canopy. Flicks over leaves and digs into rotting logs with its strong bill in search of invertebrates. Distinguished from Eurasian Blackbird by chestnut saddle and wattles.
Four-colored Bushshrike
Telophorus viridis
Beautiful bird with an olive back, red throat, and black chest band. Varies geographically: has a yellow belly in the east and an olive-green one in the west. The male has a broader chest band than the female. Found in forest undergrowth, thickets, and thick woodland. Skulking bird that is most often located by voice: a perky “du-do-whit.” Range does not overlap with the similar Doherty’s Bushshrike.
