Malayan Whistling-Thrush

Myophonus robinsoni

Dark bluish thrush-like bird with a bright yellow bill. Found solely in the highlands of peninsular Malaysia. Lacks “spangled” look of Blue Whistling-Thrush. Found in hilly or montane forests, where it favors wet stony areas around streams or gullies. Call is a high sharp whistle, somewhat akin to brakes squealing.

Its natural habitat is montane forests. It is usually found near streams. It is situated at elevations of about 750–1,750 m (2,460–5,740 ft) in central peninsular Malaysia. The Malayan whistling thrush historically ranged from the Cameron Highlands to the Genting Highlands. It was present in the Cameron Highlands, where it was trapped in the 1950s and 1960s, but a further survey in 2009–2010 failed to find it there, bringing into question the reliability of intermediate sightings; it is possible that there may have been confusion with the subspecies dicrorhynchus of the blue whistling thrush (Myophonus caeruleus). Since 1980, it has been trapped and recorded with certainty only in Fraser's Hill.

Buff-throated Tody-Tyrant

Buff-throated Tody-Tyrant

Hemitriccus rufigularis

Small and rather scarce flycatcher found inside tall, undisturbed cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes. Note olive back and wings, buffy head and breast, and pale gray belly. May show some faint underpart streaking in southern part of its range. Typically encountered alone, actively chasing insects in lower to middle levels of the forest. Gives sharp “weep” calls either in a leisurely series or in a faster burst.

Velvet-fronted Grackle

Velvet-fronted Grackle

Lampropsar tanagrinus

Slim, medium-sized blackbird closely associated with water. Plumage is entirely black with iridescent sheen; note dark eyes. At close range, note rather short bill and diagnostic patch of short, dense feathers on forehead. Farther away, note habitat, social habits, and vocalizations. Found in flooded habitats including coastal swamps and riverine forest. Flocks rove through forest, often descending to ground at the water's edge, probing a variety of substrates in search of food while vocalizing constantly. Song is regionally variable and consists of grating, creaking, and sharp whistled notes; low chucking calls are similar to those of many other blackbirds. Distinctive if seen well; distinguished from other grackles by dark eyes, and from male Shiny Cowbird by habitat (usually) and longer bill and tail.

Short-toed Snake-Eagle

Short-toed Snake-Eagle

Circaetus gallicus

Large, slightly ungainly raptor with long and very broad wings, a shortish tail, and a conspicuously big head. Pale belly and underwings contrast with the darker head in most adults, but juveniles have pale heads. All age groups have a tendency to look a bit disheveled. On perched birds look for the owl-like face and unfeathered legs. Hunts over open areas, spending lots of time hovering with rowing wingbeats into the wind.
