Purple-rumped Sunbird
Leptocoma zeylonica
A colorful sunbird; the male has a green metallic crown and shoulder patch, a dark brown body with purple a rump, a purple throat, lemon-yellow underparts, and whitish flanks. The female is light grayish-brown above and pale yellow below. The female can be separated from female Purple Sunbirds by their grayish-white (not yellow) throat. Often seen hopping and hovering around flowers, picking up insects, and probing flowers for nectar. The song is a twittering “tityou, tityou, trritt, tityou.”

Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher
Myiodynastes luteiventris
Large, streaky flycatcher that sounds remarkably similar to a squeaky toy. Note bold white eyebrow and mustache and bright rufous tail. Large bill. Ranges from Mexico to Bolivia. Within limited distribution in the U.S., has an affinity for sycamore trees in foothills and canyons. Elsewhere in range, found in a wider variety of forested habitats. Distinctive voice is often the first clue to its presence. Compare with Streaked, Variegated, and Piratic Flycatchers; note bill size and voice.

Swift Parrot
Lathamus discolor
Colorful migratory parrot with long red pointed tail. Breeds in Tasmania and migrates to southeastern Australia in autumn and winter. Found in a wide variety of forests, where its presence is largely dictated by flowering eucalypts on which it feeds. Adult bright green with red and yellow on face and a subtle blue-purple crown patch. In flight, shows bright red underwings and long red tail. Compare Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, which has shorter green-yellow tail. Calls include a sharp rattling as well as short, piercing squeaks.
