White-lored Warbler

Myiothlypis conspicillata

Gray and yellow warbler found only in the Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia. Note the white crescents above and below the eye, white stripe between the eye and the bill, and the dark crown stripes. Usually encountered in pairs that stay quite low inside cloud forest. Gives a squeaky, high-pitched series of notes, and pairs often sing together. Regularly seen in El Dorado Nature Reserve, often near the lodge.

Striated Softtail

Striated Softtail

Thripophaga macroura

Distinctive-looking rufous bird, heavily streaked with a bright cinnamon tail. Note the orange chin patch. Found in humid forest with dense vine tangles, where it forages by gleaning from the understory to the subcanopy and often accompanies mixed-species flocks. The song is two clear notes flowed by a rattle. The superficially similar but larger Pale-browed Treehunter lacks the orange chin and has a more robust bill.

Junin Grebe

Junin Grebe

Podiceps taczanowskii

Critically endangered grebe found only on Lake Junín in the high Andes of central Peru. Adults are gray and white with a ruby-red eye; young birds have a brownish tinge. Extremely similar to the far more common Silvery Grebe, but Junin Grebe is slightly larger with a longer bill, a skinnier neck, darker flanks, and a paler bill. These differences are more evident when both species are present, to allow for direct comparison. Not easily seen or identified from the lakeshore; a boat is usually needed for close-up views.

Olrog's Gull

Olrog's Gull

Larus atlanticus

Large, dark-backed gull with a broad black band on a white tail. Breeding adults have mostly clean white bodies with black backs and wings. In the nonbreeding season, adults have a black hood and a broken white eye-ring. Immatures are very distinctive, with mottled gray-brown backs and brown breasts and heads with a white patch around the bill. Usually seen on the immediate coast, where it mostly eats crabs. During the austral winter, some migrate farther north.
