Lemon-rumped Warbler
Phylloscopus chloronotus
Small leaf warbler with many extremely similar relatives. Like other “Pallas’s-type” leaf warblers, has olive-yellow upperparts, pale underparts, prominent brow and crown stripes, double wingbars, and a pale rump. Unlike Ashy-throated and Buff-barred Warblers, lacks any white on outer tail edges. Pallas’s averages yellower-headed and brighter overall. Gansu and Chinese Leaf Warblers can be incredibly similar, but Lemon-rumped averages whiter-browed and yellower-bellied than the former, more contrastingly-marked on the head than the latter, and darker-billed than both. As with many other physically similar leaf warblers, best distinguished by voice and habitat. Breeds in coniferous and mixed forests at mid- to high-elevation forests, though may descend into foothills in the winter. Two song types are both highly distinctive; one is a buzzy, descending rattling trill and the other is a series of high-pitched clicking twitters. Call is a loud, strident pair of notes: “pse-tew!”

Sombre Kingfisher
Todiramphus funebris
A large forest kingfisher with a dark back, white underparts, and a white eyebrow and collar. Back color is earth-brown in females and tinged with green in males. Juveniles resemble females but show a pale-tipped bill and dark scales on collar and breast. Inhabits forest understory, forest edge, and mangroves in lowlands and hills. White eyebrow and dark-colored upperparts distinguish it from Collared and Sacred Kingfishers. Typical staccato song resembles laughter: “KE-KE-KE-kower--kower---kower,” with the latter part sounding like a descending cackle. Also gives a “wer-wer-wer-wer-wer” as well as agitated, harsh “kip” notes in series.
Brown-chested Lapwing
Vanellus superciliosus
Large, long-legged upland shorebird. Note the rufous above the bill and below the gray hood. In flight, the top of the wing is black and brown, with a bold white stripe across the middle. Found in very open habitats including short grassland, recently burned areas, and lakeshores. Nomadic and migratory species that is generally uncommon. Often found in small flocks. Call is a high-pitched “chit-chit-chit.”

Small boldly patterned finch. Male has black hood, yellow belly, and yellow wing patch. Female much drabber, overall dull yellowish-green but still shows yellow wing patch. Most often seen in pairs, often perched in the canopy but sometimes lower. Usually close to forest, but hangs around clearings and edges.
