Sri Lanka Hanging-Parrot

A large greenbul often found close to the ground in areas with large trees and open understory, and occasionally in forest edge and other more open habitats. Largely olive-green above and greenish-yellow below with a yellow throat, bright blue facial skin around the eye, a large, angular, laterally compressed bill, and a long red tail. Song is a haunting, resonant series of descending whistles, “WHUUUR-WHUUR-WHUUR-WHUR,” with each note often quavering.

Secretive, rare medium-sized antshrike of the dense forests of the Cordillera Divisor of remote western Brazil and eastern Peru. Males are dark gray with a bluish tint to the back and upperparts, while females are bluish-gray above and brownish-orange below. Inhabits the lower levels of forests, where it is more often heard than seen; voice is a fast series of notes increasing in speed before finishing with a final higher note.

A small, slender-billed, mostly slate-gray cuckooshrike that shows extensive pale edgings on the wing feathers. Male has a black face and throat, while on females, black is limited to the area between the bill and eye. Singles, pairs, or groups can be found in wooded areas, plantations, and scrub from sea level to foothills. Confined to the Sula Islands. Smaller and more slender-billed than Slaty and Black-faced Cuckooshrikes. Male is darker overall than Black-faced Cuckooshrike, with no white tail tip and a less distinct black face mask, and black does not extend onto breast. Gives an upslurred nasal “whirrt” as well as “pik” notes.
