Ecuadorian Tyrannulet
Phylloscartes gualaquizae
Small, warbler-like flycatcher found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in Ecuador, northern Peru, and southern Colombia. Plumage is yellow-olive with a gray crown, yellowish wingbars, white eyebrow, and black stripe through the eye. Facial pattern is not well-defined, imparting a “messy” look. Also note thin, black bill. Forages actively in the forest canopy, frequently giving a dry, sputtering trill, and is almost always encountered with mixed-species flocks.

Chiribiquete Emerald
Chlorostilbon olivaresi
Poorly known hummingbird found only in the remote Chiribiquete Mountains in southeastern Colombia, far from the Andes. Male is iridescent green with a bluish tail. Female has pale underparts, black mask, and white stripe behind the eye. Very similar to the widespread Blue-tailed Emerald, but larger and longer billed. Inhabits scrubby areas in the higher parts of the mountains, and avoids dense forest.

Black-and-white Monjita
Heteroxolmis dominicana
Large, slim flycatcher with a fairly long tail. Males are mostly white with black wings and tail. Females have a grayish crown and back; note the white rump and white wingbar. Occurs in marshes and damp natural grasslands, occasionally in coastal dunes. Usually silent. The smaller White Monjita has less black in the wings and tail.

Pale-billed Scrubwren
Aethomyias spilodera
A small bird of foothill forest understory and midstory. Dark brown upperparts, paler underparts and characteristic pale bill. Races differ. Some with spotted throat and whitish or buffy underparts. Searches actively for insects in small groups or mixed flocks, often flicking its tail. Co-occurs at elevations with other scrubwrens, including Gray-green and Perplexing, but Pale-billed has an obvious pale bill. Song, an up-and-down “see-saw” repeated. Call, a scratchy chattering.
