Coracina larvata
Chunky, dark gray bird with a dark face. Dark face patch is more extensive on males than females; males on Sumatra have entirely black heads. Inhabits moist foothill and montane forest. Moves through the upper levels of forest, often with other species in mixed flocks. Gives various high squeaky calls, including an inflected “weee-tee!”.

Pearly-breasted Conebill
Conirostrum margaritae
Small tanager with uniform blue-gray plumage, paler below, with pale pinkish legs. Differs from Bicolored Conebill in lacking buffy tones below and in being paler above. Found on river islands along larger rivers, where it exclusively uses stands of middle-aged Cecropia trees. Forages high in the canopy.

Black-thighed Grosbeak
Pheucticus tibialis
Large-billed bird with yellow head, body, and black back and wings. Look for massive triangular bill and obvious white patch on wing. Sexes similar. Found in open wooded areas like forest edges, second growth, and gardens. Usually seen singly or in pairs.

Rufous-tailed Robin
Larvivora sibilans
Combination of strongly scaled breast, rufous tail, and round-headed appearance distinguish this species from others in its range. Small and skulky, sticking to dense shrubbery and shorter trees in its forest breeding grounds, where it favors dense, moist growth in lowland broadleaf forests. Often bolder on migration, emerging into forest edges and gardens. Song is distinctive, a long, wet-sounding descending trill.
