Flores Jungle Flycatcher
Eumyias oscillans
A dark flycatcher of denser montane forest. Dingy brown above with a rufous wash to wings, rump, and tail. Dark gray throat and breast, whitish belly, and a buff base to the undertail. Singles and pairs are inconspicuous in the undergrowth and midstory, often joining mixed-species flocks. Separated from Asian Brown Flycatcher by larger size, entirely dark bill, duller underside, and lack of a white throat. Sings a jumbled, high-pitched warbling: “tiritirtir-tu…”

Manus Brush Cuckoo
Cacomantis blandus
Endemic to the Admiralty Islands off northeastern New Guinea (Manus being the largest of these islands), this smallish-medium cuckoo is the only one in its range. Light gray head and upper chest with buff-orange underparts. Inhabits forests and forest edges, including coastal scrub and villages. Song is a loud, piercing series of short, trilled whistles that slowly descends in pitch: “PIIR, PIIR, PIir, Piir, piir.”

Morotai White-eye
Zosterops dehaani
A tiny warbler-like songbird with a pale eye-ring, endemic to Morotai. Note black head, a broad white eye-ring, a pale forehead line, a pale patch between bill and eye, a gray back, and no yellow below. Singles, pairs, or groups inhabit forest, edge, and cultivated areas in lowlands and hills. Gives a high-pitched twittering song, characteristic of white-eyes.

Buff-throated Apalis
Apalis rufogularis
Plain apalis with dark gray upperparts and pale underparts. The head pattern of males varies geographically. In the northwestern part of the range, the head and breast are completely dark. In the rest of the range, the throat and breast are pale. Found in the canopy of low- and middle-elevation humid forest. Usually in pairs or small groups, which will join mixed-species flocks. The main vocalization is a rough, quickly repeated “chree” which can be accompanied by a piping call. Similar to Gray Apalis, but has a buffy wash on the underparts.
