Freckle-breasted Woodpecker

Dull brown reed warbler with a sharply marked head, found in a variety of wetland habitats with substantial vegetation cover. Namesake black brow line is not always apparent, but the thick and strikingly pale supercilium is distinctive in its clean-cut and squared-off appearance. Somewhat similar to the rarer Streaked Reed Warbler, but averages much darker and lacks the latter's black striping on the back and wings. Song is a scrambled set of chatters, chirps, and rattles, more musical and tuneful than Oriental Reed Warbler. Gives dry “chit,” often in series.

Yellow euphonia of lowland rainforest. Males are rich golden-yellow with a light gray nape and prominent white lores; females are similar but with gray underparts. Compared to similar female euphonias, look for the pale patch around the bill and yellow undertail coverts; never shows an orange wash as in other species. Prefers open forest habitats, like young rainforest and forest clearings, but also found sometimes within mature rainforest. Gives a variety of calls, including a short series of high whistles and chips, and a smooth “dwick” call.

Unusual males are all-black. Females are olive-green, with paler underparts. Both sexes have a pale eye: yellow in males and pale brown in females. Found in wet scrub, cultivation, and along forest edge. Usually found in flocks and bustling breeding colonies. Vocalizations are typical of weavers: “chet” notes and a sizzling, “radio static” song. In the east, males very similar to Maxwell’s Black Weaver, but they are larger, prefer more open habitats, and have a bright yellow rather than gray eye.
