Brown Jay
Cyanocorax morio
Well-named: this distinctive large jay is the color of dark chocolate with paler grayish belly. Sexes alike; juveniles similar to adults but with yellow legs, bill, and eyering. Long tail and floppy flight with deep wingbeats. Common and conspicuous in Mexico and Central America, with very limited range in U.S. Found in small groups in wooded habitats, often near water. Sometimes seen at bird feeders. Listen for very loud calls "kleer, Kleer, kleer."

Brown jays vary in plumage geographically: there are two main groups. Northern birds are almost completely dark brown, with lighter brown on the underparts. Southern birds are white-bellied and have bright white tips to the outer tail feathers. The intergrade zone is in Veracruz, Mexico.<p>Adults in both populations have black bills, legs, and feet. Immatures have yellow bare parts, including yellow eye-rings.<p>The voice is a loud but low-pitched pee-ah call and is often modified to suit its situation or mood.

It occurs from Mexico south into Central America on the Gulf slope. The northernmost extent of the bird is in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. In Central America, the brown jay is not found in El Salvador.

White-faced Whistling-Duck
Dendrocygna viduata
Striking duck with black-and-white head, rufous breast, and barred flanks. Like all whistling-ducks, long neck and legs give it a gooselike appearance. Found in freshwater marshes, lakes, and rice fields. Usually in flocks, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. Quite widespread in South America and Africa. Feeds at night.
Spillmann's Tapaculo
Scytalopus spillmanni
A standard Scytalopus tapaculo: plain dark gray with browner flanks and rump. Acts like a mouse, scurrying around on or near the ground within montane forest. Very difficult to see, but quite common in its range in the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. Occurs from around 1,900–3,200 m, which is typically higher than Nariño Tapaculo. Averages slightly lower in elevation than Blackish Tapaculo, but plenty of overlap. Note the very different song. More often heard than seen. Listen for a trill so fast that you can’t distinguish individual notes.
Sooty Barbet
Caloramphus hayii
Earth-toned bird with a large, powerful bill. Dark brown above and white below with a rusty-orange head and chest; the only predominantly brown barbet in its range. Inhabits both primary and secondary forests, occasionally venturing into edge habitats. Unlike other barbets, does not have a loud rollicking song; instead, listen for its high thin “tseep” notes, often given in series.
