Sula Golden-Bulbul
Hypsipetes longirostris
A noticeably long-billed thrush-sized bird with an olive head and upperside and uniform yellow underparts. Pairs or small groups inhabit forests, edges, and plantations in the lowlands and foothills. Endemic to the Sula Islands, where it is the only bulbul present. Vocalizations include a series of churring warbles, as well as harsh rasping notes and soft “whip” and bubbling calls.

The Sula golden bulbul (Hypsipetes longirostris) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family Pycnonotidae. It is endemic to the Sula Islands (east of Sulawesi) in Indonesia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

The Sula golden bulbul was originally classified in the genus Criniger, and has also been classified in the genus Alophoixus. The Sula golden bulbul was formerly considered as conspecific with five other bulbuls, all called the northern golden bulbul before they were all split.

Restricted to Isla Robinson Crusoe in the Juan Fernandez Islands where no similar species occur. Uncommon and declining. Favors remaining patches of native scrub and low woodland, mainly at elevations above the town. Usually in pairs, hopping low in vegetation; can be curious. Identified by streaked breast and staring pale eyes; wispy crest is often held flattened.

Nocturnal and extremely rarely encountered by day, when it roosts in thick, tangled foliage. Frequently hawks from a perch. Listen for its strange, mooing moan: “wuoOOOhwwhh”.

Tiny, very short-tailed antwren of rainforest midstory and lower canopy. Males are yellow with white head and wing bars, and extensive black streaking on the head and back; females are similar to males, but have a red-orange wash on the head and more extensive streaking in the breast. Most common in young rainforest and around forest edges, where often found with mixed species flocks. Commonly detected by its song, an accelerating series of musical notes that rises and drops in pitch at the end.
