Bokmakierie
Telophorus zeylonus
A large, sturdy olive-gray and yellow bushshrike with a distinctive black chest band that arcs up to the bill base, forming a broad necklace. In flight the dark tail has striking yellow tips. The juvenile is dull and lacks the chest band. Pairs are bold in shrubby and open country, where they forage low in bushes or grass clumps, hopping on open ground or running between clumps looking for invertebrates. The species has a varied and complex repertoire of songs and calls, the most characteristic of which is a duetted onomatopoeic “bok-mak-ie-rie,” often delivered from a conspicuous perch.

Sangihe Hanging-Parrot
Loriculus catamene
A tiny, green, very short-tailed parrot restricted to Sangihe Island. Mostly bright green with a red rump, upper tail, and throat in both sexes. Male differs from female in having a red forehead patch and a pale eye. Singles or pairs occur in forest, forest edge, and plantations in both lowlands and foothills. The only tiny, short-tailed parrot on the island. Calls include a very high-pitched “zeet” and repeated “tzew-tzew-tzew.”

Crimson-backed Tanager
Ramphocelus dimidiatus
Striking red tanager with fairly limited range in lowlands and foothills below 1,300 m. Male is overall velvety red, brightest on the flanks and rump and darker on the head. Wings and tail are black. Females are duller reddish brown. Note silver bill with swollen base of lower mandible. Unlikely to be confused in range. Typically found in small flocks in shrubby open habitats and second growth.

Superb Fruit-Dove
Ptilinopus superbus
Tiny rainforest dove with white belly and white vent (compared to Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove which has a yellow belly and vent). Males have a thick black chest band and purple crown. Occurs in eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and down the east coast of Australia (where it is more common in the north). Voice is often a short sequence of repeated hoots that don’t accelerate to the same extent as Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove.
