White-shouldered Antshrike

White-shouldered Antshrike

Thamnophilus aethiops

Shy antshrike found in understory of lowland and foothill rainforest. Male is dark gray or black; he also has small white dots on the shoulder and a white line at the bend of the wing, but these features are not always evident in the field. Female is plain brown; on the western edge of the range, she also has a black face, throat, and tail. Usually first detected by voice: song is a soft series of evenly spaced, nasal caws.

Gunnison Sage-Grouse

Gunnison Sage-Grouse

Centrocercus minimus

Large turkeylike bird found in extensive areas of sagebrush. Both sexes gray overall with very fine patterning, black belly, and long pointed tail. Males have a white breast and a black throat. Spectacular male display involves fanning tail, inflating yellow air sacs on chest, and thrusting them forward to produce liquidy popping noises. Extremely similar to more widespread Greater Sage-Grouse but smaller and no range overlap. Also note lighter tail and longer head plumes on Gunnison when displaying. Most easily seen at display sites in early spring; can be very inconspicuous at other times of year. Tends to forage in wet riparian areas near sagebrush. Population in decline.

Copper-tailed Hummingbird

Copper-tailed Hummingbird

Saucerottia cupreicauda

This hummingbird is found in humid forest in mountainous regions of eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil. Plumage is bright green with a coppery rump and tail, and belly ranges in color from pale gray to buff. Occasionally seen in lowlands, where it is perhaps just a seasonal visitor or wanderer. Formerly considered to be a subspecies group of Green-bellied Hummingbird.
