Compact Weaver
Pachyphantes superciliosus
Has a typical weaver color scheme but an unusual shape: a chunky body, heavy bill, and short tail. Breeding males and females have a black mask, and the crown is yellow in males and black in females. Non-breeding birds are more distinctive than typical non-breeding weavers: buff below, with a dark crown and eye-stripe. Found in wet and grassy microhabitats within savanna, forest, scrub, and cultivation. Usually in small flocks. Along with typical weaver “chit” notes and sizzling, “radio static” song, also often gives a “cheep” call. Superficially similar to other weavers, but separated by distinctive shape.
分类信息
Some authorities, including Sibley & Monroe, and James Clements, place this species in the monotypic genus Pachyphantes. The construction of the nest of the compact weaver suggests an affinity with the thick-billed weaver Amblyospiza, which could put it in the subfamily Amblyospizinae.

Gabon Woodpecker
Dendropicos gabonensis
A medium-sized woodpecker of forest edge, often seen probing and prying into wood for insects. Shows a solid green back and upper tail, a red crown, dark cheeks, and heavily spotted or streaked underparts. This combination of plumage characteristics is unique within its range, where other green-backed woodpeckers co-occur. Call is a buzzing “z-zeep” or a repeated harsh “zaa zaa.”

Large, long-tailed gray, black, and white shrike. The male has completely white underparts, while the female can show a small rufous flank patch. Large white patches at the base of the tail are conspicuous in flight. In the eastern part of the range, found in woodland, savanna, and cultivation. In the west, found only in arid thorn savanna. Always in small and conspicuous groups. The vocalization is given in chorus by a group: a fast, jangling mixture of slurred calls. Distinguished from other black-masked, gray-backed shrikes by the black line connecting the black wing and black face-mask, and by the large white patches in the base of the tail.
Puerto Rican Oriole
Icterus portoricensis
A sleek inhabitant of wooded areas that ventures into gardens and parks searching for flowers and fruit; prefers areas with palms. The adult is distinctively all black except for its yellow vent, rump, and shoulders. No similar species occur within its range. Immatures are yellow to yellow-orange and resemble immature Baltimore Orioles, but have thicker and blacker bill and lack the white wingbars seen on Baltimore Orioles. Full song is fluid series of whistled upslurred and down-slurred notes. Calls include a buzzy “zzwhi” and an emphatic “tchu.”
