White-cheeked Cotinga

White-cheeked Cotinga

Zaratornis stresemanni

Rare cotinga found only in high-elevation woodland in the western Andes of Peru. It is heavily streaked with brown and buff and has a white face and black cap. Feeds mainly on mistletoe berries; may rest on exposed branch for long periods of time when not feeding. Typical song is a series of sharp rasps that speeds up and then slows down again.

Pangani Longclaw

Pangani Longclaw

Macronyx aurantiigula

A large and relatively colorful member of the pipit family with a black necklace, a yellow-orange throat, a yellow breast, and whitish sides with long streaks. The white corners of the dark tail are conspicuous during its weak, fluttering flight. Found in grassland with some bushes and trees. Similar to Yellow-throated Longclaw, though there is only minor overlap in range; orange-throated birds are easily identified, but some individuals have a yellow throat, and these can be separated by their paler and much more heavily streaked flanks. Brownish immatures can be confused with pipits, but are larger and more robust. Not very vocal, but gives a high-pitched whistle and a simple song of doubled phrases.

Turkestan Ground-Jay

Turkestan Ground-Jay

Podoces panderi

Odd dove-gray corvid with a slightly decurved bill. Note black lores, tail, and chest. Delicate buffy-pinkish wash on the chest visible in good light. Inhabits sandy deserts with scattered shrubs. Often perches out in the open, next to roads, and forages on the ground in small flocks or pairs. Gives a bubbling ‘bl’lip, bl’lip’, often in the early morning.
