Black-and-yellow Silky-flycatcher
Phainoptila melanoxantha
Plump fruit-eating bird with uncertain taxonomic affiliations. Shape, small bill, and plumage are distinctive. Male is mostly black above with yellow rump, dirty yellow chest and flanks, and gray belly. Female is olive above with gray head and contrasting black cap. Feeds on fruit in montane forests, usually singly or in pairs. Slow-moving, often sitting still. Limited range.

The black-and-yellow phainoptila is a small, rotund bird with distinctive yellow flanks. Males have a black back, head and tail, yellow flanks and rump, olive breasts and grey bellies. Females have a black cap, olive breast, rump, wings and tail, yellow flanks, and grey throat, nape, and belly. The young are similar to adult females, but are duller and with no grey on nape and dusky streaking on breast.

Black-and-yellow phainoptilas are found from Costa Rica to western Panama, in mountains from 1800 m (6000 ft.) to timberline, although they may wander lower after breeding season. They are also found in highland forests and adjacent second growth and gardens.

Gray-olive Greenbul
Phyllastrephus cerviniventris
Fairly small and typically plain greenbul. The pale bill and legs are unusual. Also note the pale whitish or orangish eye. Found in the thick undergrowth and mid-story of forest. Usually in small, vocal groups. The distinctive call is an accelerating series of nasal barking notes. Similar to several other greenbul species, but separated by the pale bill and legs. Further separated from Cabanis’s Greenbul by the lack of yellowish tones on the underparts.
Andaman Drongo
Dicrurus andamanensis
A medium-sized, dark drongo with a strong bill and a deeply-forked tail with tips curling outwards. Inhabits forests and forest edges, where it hawks for insects under the canopy. Often found in small groups and will flock with other species as well. Calls include tinkling sounds, metallic whistles, and a variety of short harsh notes.
Yellow-bellied Bulbul
Alophoixus phaeocephalus
Colorful and easily recognizable, this attractive bulbul has a bright lemon-yellow belly, snow-white throat, bluish-gray head, and greenish upperparts. Lack of a crest distinguishes it from other similarly-colored bulbuls within its range. Found in lowland and hill forest, often in mixed flocks. Calls are coarse and dry-sounding.
