White-crested Guan
Penelope pileata
Large guan. Has a dark brown back contrasting with rich rufous-chestnut underparts and neck. Note the broad white cap. Occurs in dense humid forest, where it mostly forages in trees but may descend to the ground.

The white-crested guan is a large bird and grows to a length of about 80 centimetres (31 in). It has a long crest of white feathers which gives it its name, bluish cheeks, black upper parts glossed with green, dark reddish-brown underparts and a long black tail. The voice is a raucous cackle, "eh-uh" or "u u u u u".

The white-crested guan is endemic to Brazil. Its range is limited to the south-central and southeastern parts of the Amazon basin, although it just extends across the Rio Araguaia into the Cerrado ecoregion. Its habitat is tropical forest, mostly dense, solid-ground forest, but it sometimes also occurs in seasonally-flooded areas.

Black Scrub-Robin

A unique and unmistakable passerine. Large and dark with a magnificent white-patterned tail that it often holds up. Spends much time on the ground or on low branches. In flight shows a rusty wing pattern. Favors dense scrub in arid zones. Variable song is sweet and melodious, often including trills and rattles. Calls include a pleasant, descending “jweeee” and chattering notes.
Southern Pied-Babbler
Turdoides bicolor
A striking black-and-white babbler lacking any facial markings. Groups of 3-15 range through arid savanna, preferring areas with thorn trees, where they associate with Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver and Crimson-breasted Gonolek. The species gives a high-pitched aggravated babbling in group chorus. The similar Bare-cheeked Babbler differs from the Southern Pied-Babbler by having bare black skin patches near the eye and a rufous nape.
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Sitta canadensis
Small, cute, energetic nuthatch. Distinctive with bold black-and-white head pattern, blue-gray upperparts, and orangey belly. Males are brighter than females. Typically found in coniferous or mixed forests, often in mixed flocks with other songbirds. Creeps along tree trunks and branches, often upside-down. Nomadic; they sometimes move south in large numbers in fall and winter. Visits feeders. Listen for nasal calls.
